2017 Fall Conference News

We are finally able to begin sharing some details of our coming fall 2017 Region 18 Conference!  We will be having our conference at the beautiful Marriott Hotel in Charleston, West Virginia on the weekend of October 7th.

Your room rate of $109 per night will include your morning breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, potato hash, Startbucks coffee, orange juice and toast, as well as a waived parking fee for their parking garage during your two-night stay.  The hotel has a nice swimming pool and an exercise room.  There is a shopping mall right across the street, which might be of interest to those who wish to bring along their families or significant other(s) who might not wish to attend the conference.  For a sneak peek at our hotel, check out this link.

We are looking into a Friday night social activity for those who wish to and are able to come in a little early for the event.  We are also considering a possible informal golf outing on Friday afternoon, if the weather permits and there is sufficient interest.

Registration will open in late April or early May and will include an early bird rate.  So make sure you are watching for that and do not miss it.

We are now working on lining up speakers.  Our intent is to have a full day of professional speakers on Saturday and possibly a less formal presentation on Sunday morning.  We will have additional updates on that and registration coming in a future issue of the newsletter.  In the mean time, please block out the weekend of October 6th through October 8th for what is shaping up to be a terrific event!  We look forward to your joining us.

Bringing Up Our Future – On Mentoring Junior Developers

While it is one thing to learn from videos or blog posts, it is a different experience when you have someone to turn to that can answer the questions you have when you have them. It makes a world of difference to be able to ask someone “What do they mean when they say ‘inheritance vs. interfaces’?” When you have someone who forces you to think about what it is you want in life and what steps you may need to take to get there… someone who can make introductions and offer direction… it makes your career and life a little less scary and a lot more manageable. In this session, we will look at some practices that are used by great mentors in the field and learn lessons on how we can be great role models and mentors for our future – junior developers!

Sarah Dutkiewicz has been in the technical realm since the late 90s. She has served in many roles – including technical support, manager, desktop support, server administrator, database administrator, developer, instructor, and mentor. Currently, Sarah is a Lead Instructor with The Software Guild in Akron, OH. Throughout her career, Sarah has found her place in the technical community – as an organizer, speaker, facilitator, author, editor, reviewer, blogger, and advocate. Due to her community involvement, Microsoft has awarded her the Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) award – 2009-2014 in Visual C#, 2015 in Visual Studio, and 2016 in Visual Studio and Development Technologies. Sarah loves sharing her passion for tech with the community whenever she can!
